Graphic Online reports that the action is backed by the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Mrs. Marietta Brew Appiah-Opong it has also emerged that judges at the lower courts will face disciplinary action in the coming days.
The President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama must however sanction proceedings to begin for higher court judges to face the disciplinary committee of the Judicial Service since the procedure is different in their case.
Renowned legal practitioner Ace Akomah told Joy FM, that the grant of immunity to Anas is in accordance to Section 19 of the Whistle-blowers’ Act (Act 720).
“I understand the processes are beginning today. Many of the judges have been called either today or tomorrow to start facing the various disciplinary committees. The constitution completely takes it out of the hands of the straight out pure judiciary system to ensure that…it’s a similar investigation that the CHRAJ boss is going through,” he added.
In a latest development, it has also emerged that judges who have been implicated in the scandal have appealed for the corruption video to be shown only to the Council for sanctions to be taken thereafter in house.
Meanwhile Executive Director of the GII, Vitus Azeem has asked Anas not to bow to the pressure of some influential people not to show the video of the judges publicly. In an interview with Citi FM he said:
“Anas did the investigations with a purpose and he spent money doing it. He does not need to ask us whether he should release it or not. If it is not released, will he achieve the aims of the investigation? So Anas should be able to take a decision to release it. In any case, one of the tools of fighting corruption is naming and shaming so there should be nothing wrong with releasing it.”
